FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
It is okay
to ask.
A few answers to help you understand the proposed practice and decide what you would like to know next.
Do I need to be a parent?
No. The proposed practice welcomes LGBTQ+ people with or without children. Identity, relationships, wellbeing and life changes are part of the individual counselling focus. Parenting and co-parenting are additional areas of support.
Do I need to identify as LGBTQ+?
No. Other clients are welcome where the service is a suitable fit. The practice’s affirming focus means LGBTQ+ identities, relationships and family structures are approached respectfully.
Does counselling have to be about my sexuality or gender?
No. You can want support for everyday pressures, relationships or change without your identity being the main topic. You choose what you would like to discuss.
Can I attend on my own about parenting?
Yes, that is part of the proposed service direction. An individual conversation can focus on your experience as a parent without requiring the rest of your family to attend.
Are appointments available now?
Appointment bookings are not open yet. The counsellor’s profile, fees, age groups served and appointment arrangements will be confirmed before bookings begin.
Will appointments be online or in person?
The practice is being developed for people in Perth. The exact location and availability of online or in-person sessions are still being confirmed.
What will sessions cost?
Fees, session length, payment arrangements and cancellation information will be published before bookings open. No fee or rebate eligibility is being advertised at this stage.
Do I need a referral?
Entry arrangements will be confirmed before appointments open. Any referral, funding or rebate requirements will be explained with the final service information.
What can I talk about in a first session?
You could start with what brought you to counselling, what has been difficult, or what you hope might change. You do not need to arrive with a complete account of your life.
Will what I say be confidential?
Before counselling begins, the practitioner will explain how your information is handled and the limits of confidentiality. The practice’s consent and privacy information will be provided before appointments open.
Is co-parenting counselling the same as mediation?
No. Counselling focuses on your emotional experience, communication and relationships. Formal family dispute resolution is a separate service. Belongrove is not currently offering mediation or section 60I certificates.
Do you counsel children or couples?
Those services have not been confirmed. The proposed support described here is individual counselling, including support for a person’s parenting or co-parenting experience. Age groups and any joint sessions will be stated before bookings open.
What if I need support today?
Belongrove is not a crisis service. If life is in danger, call 000. Lifeline provides 24-hour crisis support on 13 11 14. Our resources page also links to LGBTQ+ peer support.
